They get back to the funeral home just as the service is starting.  A man about Major House’s age, with the air of a military chaplain, starts things off with the 23rd Psalm.

            The next few days go much the same way.   As the funeral itself draws near, House’s relatives start to arrive from out of town.  Supposedly to help, but they mainly stand around in Blythe’s kitchen and occasionally ask if there’s anything they can do.  They do help eat the mountains of casseroles and salads that the neighbors keep ( Read more... )

            The ringing jolts him out of a deep sleep.  He fumbles on the nightstand for the phone and opens it.  “Doctor Chase,” he says into it.

“This is Tempe General Hospital.”

He sits up and turns on the light.  “What’s happened?”

“John House has taken a turn for the worse.  The family should come in.”

            The rest of the day goes by without much change in Major House’s condition, or anyone else’s.  Around five in the afternoon the pharmacy finally condescends to fill House’s faxed Vicodin prescription, after which he starts agitating to go home for the night.
